hen you look up at the winter sky, you may notice a small cluster of stars. They stand out more than any other group, and they almost look like a tiny big dipper.
These are the Pleiades, a cluster of hot blue stars in the constellation of Taurus. People have been looking at the Pleiades just like you for tens of thousands of years. For many cultures in the northern hemisphere, the first sight of the Pleiades signaled the coming of winter. In New Zealand Maorí culture, the first rising of Pleiades even signaled the start of their calendar year.
Today, Pleiades is still very well known in popular culture, but in some ways we still share the same relationship with it that our ancestors did.
With our modern cameras and astronomy, we can reveal a picture that our eyes could never see alone. The Pleiades star cluster is traveling through an ultra dense cloud of cosmic dust, scattering and reflecting the blue light of the stars to create the single most beautiful reflection nebula in the sky.
